Creating shipment splitting rules

Splitting rules can be set up for handling the splitting of shipments when either the weight or volume exceeds the carrier shipping capacity.

To create splitting rules:

  1. Select Transportation > Administration > Splitting Rules. The Splitting Rules list screen displays with the default splitting rule.
The default splitting rule is set to "No" for all Freight Bill To parties. You can modify the default rule to apply to all Freight Bill To parties or add additional rules that apply to specific Freight Bill To parties.
  2. Click New to create a new splitting rule. The Splitting Rules detail screen displays.
  3. Specify the applicable Freight Bill To for the rule by typing in the Freight Bill To name; or by performing a lookup and selecting the name from the results.
  4. Specify the following:
    Shipment Splitting
Select Yes to perform shipment splitting or No to not perform shipment splitting; default value is No.
    Maximum Split Shipment Weight
Specify the maximum weight parameter used to determine the maximum weight of the shipments resulting from the split; default value is null/empty.
    • If the maximum split shipment weight field is empty, the highest maximum weight within the applicable rate contracts is used to determine the maximum weight of the shipments resulting from the split.
    • If a maximum split shipment weight parameter is entered and the entered value is higher than the highest maximum weight within the applicable rate contracts, the rate contract maximum is used to determine the maximum weight of the shipments resulting from the split.
    • If a maximum split shipment weight parameter is entered and the entered value is lower than the highest maximum weight within the applicable rate contracts, the entered maximum split shipment weight is used to determine the maximum weight of the shipments resulting from the split.
    Maximum Split Shipment Volume
Specify the maximum volume parameter used to determine the maximum volume of the shipments resulting from the split; default value is null/empty.
    • If the maximum split shipment volume field is empty, the highest maximum volume (if provided) within the applicable rate contracts is used to determine the maximum volume of the shipments resulting from the split.
    • If a maximum split shipment volume parameter is entered and the entered value is higher than the highest maximum volume (if provided) within the applicable rate contracts, the rate contract maximum is used to determine the maximum volume of the shipments resulting from the split.
    • If a maximum split shipment volume parameter is entered and the entered value is lower than the highest maximum volume (if provided) within the applicable rate contracts, the entered maximum split shipment volume is used to determine the maximum volume of the shipments resulting from the split.
    Enable Line Splitting
Select Yes to allow the quantity within a line item to be split between shipments or No to not allow the quantity for a line item to be split between shipments; default value is No.
    Splitting Type
Select the Splitting Type value from the following two choices.
    • If Split Complete Only is selected, shipment splitting only occurs if all split shipments from the original shipment can be rated and routed. If all shipments cannot be rated and routed, the shipment is not split and is assigned a "New" status.
    • If Split Partial Allowed is selected, shipment splitting occurs regardless of whether all split shipments from the original shipment can be rated and routed. Any shipments that cannot rate and route are assigned a "New" status.
    Maximum Split Limit
Specify the maximum number of times a shipment can be split; default value is 5. If the shipment must be split more times than the value defined here during the splitting process to successfully split, then the splitting process is abandoned, the shipment is not split, and is assigned a "New" status.
  5. Click Save.
