Defining modification rules

Modification rules allow TM to adjust the rate/carrier when a previously tendered shipment is subsequently modified. The adjustment provides a more accurate carrier selection.

During the re-rating process, the match is done on the rate contract, not the carrier. Even if the same carrier is selected when the rate contract differs, it is considered a mismatch.

For example, the original shipment selects Carrier A with Rate Contract A covering a 45-foot trailer. The modification changes the equipment to a 48-foot trailer, which drives the carrier selection to Carrier A, Rate Contract B, which covers a 48-foot trailer. This is considered a mismatch. The application identifies a mismatch to facilitate obtaining new pricing information for the shipment/route. The match is based on any solution that has the same Rate Contract ID, not just the top ranked rate contract as it is unlikely that the same rate contract will again be the top-ranked solution.

Assume that Carrier A, the selected carrier, meets all requirements but no longer has capacity for a shipment. TM cancels the shipment and returns Carrier A's capacity to what it was without the shipment. The cancellation re-allocates capacity back to Carrier A. The re-rate/re-route selects Carrier A again and allocates the capacity to it. In this example, the same carrier/rate contract combination can receive a tender cancellation and can then re-tender. If Carrier A still has capacity and is still applicable, Carrier A receives a tender modification notice.

When the re-rate/re-route occurs, the rating and routing process resets the sequential tender limit, the tender time-out, the manual tender rule, and related information to new values.

Information Description
Re-rate/route occurs on Tendered Carrier Route When you select Yes and a modification comes in on a shipment in Tendered status, then the shipment is sent back through the rating and routing process with the modified shipment information. This can result in a tender cancellation and a new ranked carrier list.

If the carrier is changed as a result of the modification and the carrier on the shipment is an Infor SPS carrier:

  • Cancel the tender
  • Cancel the route
  • The shipment with the SPS carrier is set to a status of Canceled

Any other shipments associated with the route are reprocessed according to configuration rules.

If the carrier and rate contract are not changed as a result of the modification, the shipment and carrier route are modified and an updated tender message and Route Modified Alert are sent to the carrier.

When you select No, the shipment and carrier route are updated and an updated tender message and Route Modified Alert are sent to the carrier. If a modified shipment is part of a multi-shipment route even though No is selected, the shipment can still be canceled and reprocessed if any key transportation-related fields are updated since the modification can invalidate the entire route.

Re-rate/route occurs on Tender Accepted Carrier Route When you select Yes and a modification comes in on a shipment in Tender Accepted status, then the shipment is sent back through the rating and routing process with the modified shipment information.

Caution: Canceling the tender on a previously tender-accepted route can result in a charge from the carrier if the truck is already dispatched for the load. Use caution when setting this rule.
